Lambtastic new arrivals
On the 4th of April we welcomed two adorable baby lambs to the farm born to ewe Lavender. A further two lambs were born on the 7th of April to Lily. Both mothers and lambs are doing well. You may have been lucky enough to have spotted the lambs having a little run around in the field adjacent to the ducks and rabbits.
Lavender gave birth to two boys (rams) named Sid and Silver. Unfortunately Lavender got unwell after having her lambs, though she is now better she didn’t seem to understand she’d given birth to two lambs. She is allowing Silver to feed but unfortunately not allowing Sid to. As a result Sid is now being bottlefed and getting all the fuss from the staff and volunteer team.
Lily gave birth to two girls (ewes) named Samphire and Saffron. Lily can often be seen feeding both lambs and has been a doting mother. The last time she had lambs was in 2020. We are hoping these girls will bring new hope to the Castlemilk Moorit bloodlines- as they are a rare breed which Spitalfields contributes to the conservation of.
Castlemilk Moorits are a Scottish breed that came about using the Manx Loaghtan, moorit Shetland and wild Mouflon in the early part of the twentieth century. Spitalfields City Farm is home to 11 Castlemilk Moorits- there are currently only 900-1500 individuals. These four adorable lambs are vital in helping the breed survive and thrive.
