A New Green Walking Route for London

By Geoffrey Juden

The Farm could become part of an exciting new green walking route for London - The Great Eastern Parks Route. Geoffery Juden from East London Garden Society explains:

We are living in a period of indeterminate weather fluctuations, for many this is caused by Climate Change, it must therefore be the responsibility of all to try and achieve a better environment in which we all live. The Bishopsgate Goods Yard development had to have within in the proposed design a public park designers were appointed, eventually after five years of convincing it was agreed to have a forest garden “The Shoreditch Forest Garden” as the park. Once agreement for the forest had been gained we then took our sights for the possible travel along the railway viaduct from Allen Gardens, passing Spitalfields City Farm through the various parks and gardens to both Newham where the river Thames meets at Royal Docks as well as having a route connecting further to The London Greenway Route, reaching many parts of London. To have a travelling route without seeing traffic has been made possible elsewhere in New York and Paris using redundant rail lines as the main route for travel.

Always nature will return to an area vacated by human activity, we fell that to embellish nature, hopefully managing to work with nature as it returns, will be of benefit to all.

These projects wherever they have been enabled have had grassroots support before politicians became involved. The New York High Highline took 20 years from conception to reality, however it is hoped by gaining public support to connect the parks and gardens in east London for us all to enjoy it will take less time. Having nature be promoted by the parks and gardens on the route would indeed be a welcoming sight, it will bring a new adventure to this part of east London long may it last.
