A Neighbourhood Plan for Spitalfields

By Phil Nichols

The Spitalfields Neighbourhood Planning Forum are a group of local residents and business owners who have volunteered their time to canvas local opinion on what matters most to people living and working in the Spitalfields & Banglatown ward. This is the ward in which Spitalfields City Farm is located. They developed policies which are now approved by Tower Hamlets and are ready to be voted into action by local residents and businesses.

The plan ... will also provide real help to local small businesses ... and finally protect the area from overdevelopment and encroachment of The City ...

What will The Plan do? Stephanie Mathern from the Forum explains. “The Plan will deliver real protection for our limited areas of public open space by designating legally protected ‘Local Green Spaces’, for example Allen Gardens, Christ Church Gardens, Chicksand Street and the Farm.

It will also provide real help to local small businesses, for example by increasing the affordable workspace discount from 10% to 45% and finally protect the area from overdevelopment and encroachment of The City, including provisions for greening-up new buildings and protecting existing heritage buildings.”

Stephanie and her colleagues at the Forum are asking people locally to go to their polling station on November 11th or register to vote by post beforehand and vote YES to keep Spitalfields & Banglatown a truly beautiful and diverse neighbourhood.
