Families Go Wild in the Garden!

This week we were back in the garden after quite a while, but it was still looking good and healthy!

We started by harvesting some veg, which we had planted earlier in the year. We harvested tomatoes and sweetcorn, which most of us had never harvested before! It was fun searching our mini corn field for ears of corn!

Once we had harvested our vegetables, it was time to pull out the remains of the plants, as they won’t grow any more now it’s getting colder. We pulled out the corn and tomato plants and put them in a wheelbarrow.

Next, we went to dig out some already rotted manure to spread on our vegetable plot. Our younger volunteers did a good job, working as a team to fill the wheelbarrow.

We spread the manure over our plot, and then dug it in, getting it ready to plant more crops for the spring harvest. Then, we put the tools away, and started to prepare our sweetcorn for cooking. We had fun peeling back the layers of leaves to reveal the golden kernels underneath!

We took the old plants to the muck heap, where they will rot down and provide us with manure next year. We can then use the manure to fertilise our garden! While some of us took the wheelbarrows back to the farmyard, the others brought over the veg to the kitchen garden.

We heated some water on the stove outside, and once it was boiling, we carefully dropped in the cobs of corn to cook for just a couple of minutes.

We took it out with tongs and then slathered some margarine on it. We had to wait for the corn to cool slightly first, but then we ate it! It was so fresh and tasty, and we felt proud to have grown it ourselves!
